Too often even we as teachers sit in lectures or PD and are distracted by what’s on the screen. Visual images are always less distracting and complement what is being said. They can also often be used to emphasise a point or create humour.

In my experience, projecting a diagram, picture or other visual image whilst presenting verbally results in a far more informative session than having lots of text on display (a point which is reinforced through PEN principle 1).
