Based on advice I received via Educator Impact last year and via the PEN principle 3, for consitency I will endeavour to write “what we will do this lesson” always in the same location on the w/b. I will also do this for other important, regularly distributed information.
# 3 Spatial predictability guides attention
I think this is particularly important for student learning and is relatively easy for the teacher to implement.
* Use a similar layout in the classroom with a seating plan
* Begin and end each lesson in a similar way. Go over what has been done at the beginning and go through homework at the end.
* Use Aidan’s Central for all lessons, including handouts and homework. Students then know what to expect.
* Use the white board layout in the same way for each lesson
* Make sure the layout of handouts is consistent.
As students are able to predict these things and they know what to expect their cognitive learning is improved.
