Lori is an expert in educational technology. She obtained her PhD in 2000 for her research focused on outcomes for leaners engaged in online collaborative tasks. Lori has published over 100 book chapters, journal articles and conference papers. Her work has been supported through many national competitive research and teaching innovation grants and through industry partnerships.
Lori teaches in educational technology and educational research methods at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has been recognised for her work designing technology environments that support learning – including the 2008 Platinum Learning Impact Award by the IMS Global Learning Consortium for her work in UOW’s Graduate School of Medicine. She was awarded an ALTC Citation for Outstanding Contributions to Student Learning in 2011 for commitment to technology-enhanced communication, collaboration and community building that facilitates effective learning, supports quality teaching and leads to educational change.
Research Interests:
Lori’s research focuses on teaching and learning with technology in school, university and professional learning environments. Lori is interested in understanding the learning processes and outcomes for learners engaged in technology-supported tasks – particularly collaborative and problem-based tasks.
Lori has been working in the area of learning design for over a decade. This work is concerned with the documentation, sharing and application of teaching models. As an extension of this work, Lori is investigating teacher thinking and practices. She is interested in teacher design thinking, that is, how teachers conceptualise their design work and the psychological and contextual factors that influence that work.
Most recently, Lori is bringing these two areas of research together – how learners learn and how teachers teach with technology – through the integration of concepts and approaches from the fields of learning design and learning analytics.
